Don’t forget to Remember The Milk

Filed under: General Productivity, Productivity Systems - Nels @ 2:37 pm

Seriously, though… Remember the Milk is awesome. It took me a little while to try it out since I’d been using Airset for my todo lists… But RTM is awesome. When you combine the Ajax interface with the keyboard shortcuts, you get one outstanding web application.

Adding tasks, due dates, and prioritizing is so easy. The layout and keyboard shortcuts are both very intuitive. I haven’t used some of the features like repeating events and email reminders (since Airset has been handling that pretty well), but for someone who needs those things, I’m sure they’re great.

The only downside is you can’t apply multiple labels/tags or contexts to tasks. Of course, I haven’t yet seen a todo list that does that, so I’ll take the next best thing and run with it. If they add some sort of tagging and multi-context support, this will be hands-down the best todo list there is … as if it isn’t already.

I hope these guys get bought out by Yahoo and get totally rich. They definitey deserve it. (I only say Yahoo because they are marginally better at integrating their services than Google has been so far; more on that in my Yahoo My Web 2.0 post)

Another Shirt Tip

Now that you can get your shirts on and off more quickly… Let’s inject some style into the wardrobe situation. Don’t worry, it doesn’t require spending any more money.

Just make sure that when you go to put that shirt back in your closet, take an extra second (the one you saved by putting on quicker earlier) and make sure it goes to the back of the rack. Then you can just take the first shirt that’s there and put it on really fast! It’s like the “top of the drawer” approach for the stylish. You can even sort your shirts, so if you’ve got long sleeve for cooler climes, and short sleeve button downs for when the weather is a little warmer, you can move the “categories” around so the best available choice is always the First Choice.

This will, obviously, decrease the so-called “repeat” outfits, instantly making you more stylish than probably half of the people you work with.

The categorization also works well if your apartment/house has fairly small closets (or relatively few of them) and you have to share with someone else. I know that the first shirt after my wife’s clothes will be the one I’m going to wear.* I know it’s going to be clean, and since I limit the number of pants I have to only go with the shirts I have, I know the rest of my wardrobe will fall into place around it. (That’s a whole different post, though, isn’t it?)

*I let her have the front of the closet since I’ve got about 7 inches on her and it’s easier for me to reach back there.

Bloglines Hotkey

Filed under: General Productivity, BlogLines Tips - Nels @ 7:04 pm

This is probably old news for true GTD/Time management folks… but Bloglines now has Hotkey you can use to navigate your feeds. Yeah, it makes things go a lot faster. Use the hotkeys. Be the hotkeys.

They still have a bit of a problem with the “Keep As New” feature, but to work around that problem, I just save things to my Clippings instead of trying to check them to Keep As New. You can even organize your clippings into folders and then read only the subjects you want later on.

Hooray for Bloglines!

Put on your shirt faster

Filed under: General Productivity - Nels @ 7:42 am

I’m not sure how many people this really applies to… but for those with whose business casual leans a little more toward the casual (like myself), it’s probably pretty good.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Button the bottom 4 or 5 buttons of the shirt
  2. Put it on the hanger
  3. Then button the top button (or second from the top sometimes) so it stays on the hanger

Now, when it’s time to wear the shirt, all you have to do is unbutton the topmost button and slide the shirt over your head like a normal shirt, sweater, etc… Hello, time saved! Nice to meet you!

I wouldn’t suggest this for people who need to have crisp, clean shirts at work every day… but for us web developer types who can get by with being a little bit sloppy, it’s great!
